Many aspects of life have changed or stopped as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, however recruitment into Her Majesty’s Armed Forces isn’t one of them.

On Wednesday 1st July members of the RAF Recruitment team joined cadets from all over Kent to provide some insights into the different roles available withing the Royal Air Force and answered questions from the cadets.

I’m unsure if I want to join now, can I join in a year or two?

Yes you can, we accept new recruits up-to the age of 48 depending on trades.

What are the requirements to apply for an apprenticeship?

The mimumum qualification required is
GCSE Grade 4 or above in Maths and English.
If you are interested in engineering then you also
need a Grade 4 in a Science subject

What age can you begin your apprenticeship?

You can start an apprenciship from the age of 16

How do you apply to join the RAF and what are the selection steps?

You apply online at raf.mod.uk/recruitment/apply and then you will be invited to complete the Selection Test, Interview, Medical and Fitness Test.

What is the most difficult step to become an Officer?

This is different for all applicants.
Some find the leadership training difficult and some the interview. But I always ask the applicant how much research and training they have done. Officers need to be more proactive and find the information themselves rather then being told it.

I wear glasses, or have a medical condition, will this stop me from joining the RAF?

Eyesight requirements vary for different roles.
